Three Day Weekend

Updated: 21st Feb 2013

The Cursillo Three-Day Weekend

The purpose of Cursillo is to nourish and equip people so that they may embrace and enjoy the fullness of Christian life.

You begin your Cursillo experience by taking part in a 3-day weekend based on a live-in course run by lay people and clergy.

On Thursday evening your sponsor will take you to the weekend venue - they will plan for you to arrive between 5.00 and 6.00 pm. Your sponsor will introduce you to the Lay Coordinator and you will be accompanied to your room and invited to join in pre-dinner drinks. You will find yourself in the company of between 10 - 20 others like yourself, together with 14 lay team members and 2 - 3 ordained people who are your hosts for the weekend.

The First Evening

The first evening is planned to help you relax, to get to know the other people on your weekend and to begin to feel at home. After pre-dinner drinks and dinner you will learn something of the History of Cursillo and then finish the evening with a couple of short meditations and Compline, "Prayer at the end of the day". Finally you will retire in silence until breakfast, time to take a break from the world and prepare for the weekend. This is the only time that silence is kept.

Each Day

Each day begins with Morning Prayer followed by breakfast. Then, in a casual and relaxed atmosphere, a series of talks is presented by the team, each followed by a chance to discuss the talk in small groups.

There are creative activities, music and singing, fun, laughter and times to be serious. There is time for relaxation, conversation, private prayer and reflection, exercise or just rest. The Eucharist is celebrated each afternoon.

Community

As the weekend progresses, in the company of a small group of your fellow candidates, you will explore the themes developed in the talks and meditations - of ideals; of personal prayer and meditation; of study and of action.

You will experience the encouragement, endorsement, affirmation and support of your little community and you will be eager to continue to follow this simple method when you return to your normal life.

and after the weekend ......

After the weekend you will return to your family and community, enriched and encouraged by your weekend experience, knowing more fully the love and support that will sustain you for the rest of your life. You will join a small group of Cursillistas who meet regularly for prayer, for mutual support, encouragement and affirmation as you seek to persevere in your Christian ministry - in whatever sphere you believe you are called to serve - supported by and supporting your group.

Your "Fourth Day"

The real focus of Cursillo is on the "4th Day" - the rest of your life after your 3-day Cursillo weekend.

Cursillo does not exist for itself. It is a movement within the Anglican Church to equip and inspire people to be active apostles of Christ.
